Piranha-Film Review

A summer brainless movie if there ever was one. In the intro we see Richard Dreyfuss as Matt fishing when suddenly there's a rumble in the lake and we see a whirlpool starting to take Matt toward the center of the whirlpool (in horrible cgi effects). Apparently the shift has opened a crater in the lake and out come thousands of hungry piranhas waiting to eat anything and everything in their sights!! Then we move to spring break weekend in tiny lake town Lake Victoria sheriffed by Elisabeth Shue. When they learn of the piranhas the sheriff, the deputy (Ving Rhames) and scientist Novak (Adam Scott) visit Mr. Goodman (Christopher Lloyd) and learn about the origin of these certain piranhas. Meanwhile there's a "girls gone wild" type filmmaker ready to get the best locations for filming some hot girls and all he needs is a local to help him scout the best locations. Enter Jake Foster who happens to be the sheriff's oldest. Now I said the cgi of the intro with Dreyfuss was pretty cheesy but the piranhas looked pretty damn cool for most of the time. What really makes this fun was the GORE!! OH MY GOD!! There were moments in this film where I was laughing at the sheer bloodiness that I saw. It kind of reminded me of Dead Snow where there are several funny moments amongst the gory goings on. Hell Eli Roth even shows up in a blink you miss it scene where....well I won't tell you what happens. Jerry O'Connell as Derrick the "wild wild girls" filmmaker is pure sleaze and has an hilarious scene later in the film but I can't say when. Also for the guys there are a lot of boobie shots and we have the volcanic Kelly Brook as one of Derrick's main girls. Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension, Mirrors) directed this so he knows a little about filming gore scenes. Great recognizable cast, amazing gore, funny, stupid, brainless, girls, boobies, bikinis, chewed up limbs, eyes, etc. What more do you want in a summer movie in the winter time??
