A Prophet-Film Review

Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim) just got six years in a french prison. We don't really know what he did to deserve this. There is talk about hitting police officers but nothing is definite. He is not ready for what is about to come. We see this young man go from a timid walkover to a kingpin in this epic movie. The lead Tahar Rahim is amazing in this. I checked IMDB and found out this is first leading role and only his 4th film credit at the time this was made. It looks like since this came out he is a very busy actor. It is well deserved. We see everything through his eyes and yet we don't know what he's always thinking. Masterfully directed by Jacques Audiard we don't see all the violence that happens but when we do it is chaotic and messy. Tremendous performance by Niels Arestrup (a prolific french actor according to IMDB) as Luciani, the man who runs everything in and out of the prison. For those looking for a crime action film then stay away but if you're looking for a deep complex film with a star making turn by the leading actor then this is one of those films. In french and arabic with subtitles
