The Final Season-Film Review

Sean Astin executively produced and starred in this true story about a 1a high school baseball team in Norway, Iowa who won more state titles than any other school. These guys beat up teams that were way bigger than they were like 4a schools and the like. The film is about the final season where Norway gets to play one more year to try to get another state title before the school merges with another neighboring town. Sean plays the coach who takes over the team in that final season since the school board locks out the former coach who won all those titles (played by Powers Boothe). Needless to say he has an upward climb on his hands since some players quit and the whole town doesn't think they have a chance. It's a nice little movie about small town pride and how important schools are for small communities. I have seen this firsthand in some towns nearby where they have lost their high school. Usually it's not a pretty sight. It's hard to survive without a school sometimes. You can tell Astin loved to play this role. He does a fine job here with a likable presence. I won't tell you how the school does for their final season. You'll have to see for yourself.
