I Am Love-Film Review

Tilda Swinton is one of the best actresses we have right now. The woman just disappears in her roles. She's as good as Meryl Streep with different dialects and languages. Born in England but you wouldn't know it if you saw the movie Julia which came out last year, a powerhouse of a performance. She was the one who Benjamin Button talked to late at night and Constantine (Keanu Reeves) met at the pool toward the end of the movie (she played Gabriel). Here she plays a woman originally from Russia who falls in love and marries a man from Italy. They have children, a big beautiful villa (a great house beautifully filmed), and big parties where all their loved ones can gather. She has erased her russian past and now she is Italian. Her son is now taking over the business with her husband from her father in law who is retiring. In the meantime the son meets a chef who become friends and who want to go into business together to open a restaurant up in the hills. The chef's father owns the land but won't agree to it. But when Edoardo (her son) talks to the chef's father it's a done deal. Meanwhile Emma (Swinton) hires the chef for one of her parties for her son. There is a lot of talk about food here and a quite a lot of food preparation shown since the chef (I think his real name is Edoardo Gabbriellini and his character's name is Antonio) is a big part of the film. And the road to where Antonio lives and where the restaurant will be is a long winding road up to some amazing scenery in the film. One of the best things about the film are the locations here. Simply beautiful. I won't say what happens in the film but there is some tragedy as well as some surprises with Emma's family as well as herself. These people are filthy rich but with Emma we see that she has never forgotten her humble beginnings in another country. Recommended if you like Swinton and beautiful scenery.
