Damnit I tried not to like this film but it was a lot better than I ever would have given it credit for. The main problem I have with it is Robert Englund is not in it. He is and always will be Freddy Krueger for me. Nothing against Jackie Earle Haley who has done some tremendous work the last few years (Little Children and Watchmen). He just doesn't belong there. Also Rooney Mara (she will play Lisbeth in the american made Girl trilogy; I'm deeply worried) conveyed little to no emotion throughout the film. I never felt the danger that she was in like I felt with the original Nancy (played absolutely perfect by Heather Langenkamp-I miss that girl. Tarentino where are you? You need to put her in a movie, work your magic!) Now the positives: the much darker approach was very welcome, the cinematography was absolutely stunning, the lighting of the scenes were remarkable, it looked great on my standard 36" sony wega (no I do not have an hdtv), and Kyle Gallner (I believe the kid who's getting all possessed in the movie Haunting In Connecticut) who plays Nancy's friend Quentin, but especially Katie Cassidy (David's daughter) who was really good in her role. I tell you this girl could be a great scream queen if she wanted to. She would be believable in any of these kind of roles plus she's a hottie which is a great combination for horror. She was believable way back with When A Stranger Calls in 2006 with Camilla Belle and she was in the Black Christmas (I don't blame her for that movie!). We still haven't seen her in a starring role but I think she could pull it off, preferably in horror but I could see her in a romantic comedy as well. It would be a waste of talent to not hear her scream in films some more. If there's other people out there who can get past somebody else playing Freddy besides Englund you're a better man than I am. I just can't do it myself. Reservedly recommended.
