The newest film from Lars Von Trier (Dancer In The Dark, Dogville) about a couple who are grieving about the death of their son (in a visually amazing prologue where we see the young one fall to his death while the parents are making love). They go to their favorite place in the woods, at a place called "Eden" where they have a cabin. It is there where he (Dafoe) tries to mend she (Gainsbourg) back to health. He's a psychiatrist by trade so he tries different methods to bring her back from the dark place where she feels guilt among other things for the son's death. To say there are weird methods and strange things happening there at Eden is an understatement. It is there where the film loses me as far as interest goes. It seems to involve human nature as well as animal nature (!). What Gainsbourg does to her husband as well as herself during the film was somewhat shocking and revolting. But I didn't feel any emotion like I should have with these two people. I wasn't invested in their feelings so I outside of the film looking in which is never a good place if you don't really feel for the characters in the film. I probably would have done the same thing to the husband if I was her. The character was getting on my nerves. Nothing wrong with the performances, Dafoe was fine with what he was given and I've never seen Gainsbourg (60's french singer Serge's daughter) in any kind of role like this before. I've only till then seen her in french comedies before. Von Trier's films are an acquired taste for a lot of people so I guess I fall into that category. It's just not my cup of tea. Maybe you'll feel different. Let me know if you have a chance to see it.
