Where do these foreign films come from? Well this time we have a film from mexico. With a little more of an edge this could have been a 4 star movie but hey 3 1/2 stars is pretty damn good. The title means "under the salt" in english. Which makes sense because it's set in a small town which has a giant salt marsh outside of it. The only problem is there's dead bodies starting to pop up out of the salt. The local cops can't solve the case so in comes detective Trujillo (Humberto Zurita). Basically you meet an assortment of different interesting characters in a smallish town and you're trying to figure out who's killing all of these people. It's kind of like Dragon Tattoo but on a much smaller scale. One of the most interesting characters in the film is the funeral director's son who makes these great stop motion films with barbie and ken type dolls. These are not happy little films by no means. There is murder in these films. These little films break out with no warning and for me they were great to see. We even get to hear some Marilyn Manson when he's working in the funeral home along with some other good music. It is clear this kid has some issues. And we will see some of the reason for this. As Trujillo uncovers more and more of the mystery the film becomes stronger. More characters are introduced with questions and suspicions. Some will be ruled out while others you're thinking yeah this could be the person doing the killing. This movie came out of nowhere for me. I first saw the trailer on another film I rented from Netflix. So I put this one in my queue and I was definitely not disappointed. Yes it's another one for the library and another one for Shawn to search out. I will have to purchase this one as well. Recommended if you like mystery type films.
