A sweet little family film that reminds me of those chitty chitty bang bang type movies from the 60's and 70's. Like Snowball Express starring Dean Jones (the Herbie movies). A family has some fun adventure some magical, some not. They were always fun to watch. I wouldn't say this is as good as those movies but it was a pleasant enough time. It is during war time England where a family is getting ready to welcome a couple of relatives to their abode. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Isabel Green mother of a son and daughter, Vincent and Megsie. They are waiting to see their two cousins who are coming from London. The cousins' father is Lord Gray played by Ralph Fiennes. Also Isabel's husband is away in the war so it's just the three of them along with Isabel's scheming brother Phil (played by Rhys Ifans). The two cousins Cyril and Celia are from rich stock and are shocked that their father would take them out here to this filthy countryside to live with them while the war is on. It's not too long when a mysterious woman appears at their door to help with Isabel's troubles with looking after 4 kids. Played by Emma Thompson (who also wrote this) is the title character Nanny McPhee (based on a the Matilda children's book series). We learn that she has a little magic on her side for doing some good with the children. Eventually everybody's getting along but then they get some dire news that will change their lives. I won't say anymore about what goes on after that except it's usually kept pretty lighthearted about as much as can be. Emma played this role with obvious relish and all costars did a fine job as well. As I said utterly harmless and for kids of all ages, this one's not bad for a rental.
