Talk about bleak. Not The Road bleak but bleak nonetheless. Jennifer Lawrence (in a great role, the best thing in this movie) plays a 17 year old who's mother doesn't speak or do anything but sit in her rocker. So she has to tend to her younger brother and sister, ages 12 and 6. They are dirt poor people surrounded by the lowest forms of society, even her uncle doesn't have the best intentions in mind all the time for her. She finds out her dad put the house up for his bond and now the bondsman comes collecting since nobody can find her dad. She must now find her dad alive or dead in a week's time or her and her family will lose their house. If I remember the movie is set in the woods of missouri and there are some backwoods people in here. If they're not doing drugs they're making them. Well she stirs up the wrong trouble when she asks the wrong people where her dad is. Needless to say we do find out whether her dad is alive or dead. I doubt I could recommend this movie except for Lawrence's performance. This woman is someone to watch out for in the future. As for the rest of the movie it's so freakin' depressing with their living situation but I guess I should think about the positive because it is obvious that the daughter truly loves her two younger siblings and is trying her very best with what little resources she has since her mother is basically dead weight. 4 stars for Jennifer's performance but only 3 very reserved stars for the movie.
