| Like a lot of Will Ferrell comedies for me, I like them better after seeing them more than once. I am usually disappointed in them a little (Stepbrothers and Semi-Pro being the exceptions) at first but then I start to notice the one liners that always seem to be in his movies. (Case in point, Anchorman, what I thought was just okay when I saw it in the theater but learned to really like it with repeated viewings, same way, Talladega Nights, but not so much Land Of The Lost, just not so good). And I think this is going to be another one of those because after seeing it I thought wow that was a disappointment but a few days later I remembered certain scenes in it that made me chuckle a little bit. I hope Mark Wahlberg keeps doing these kinds of roles like Date Night and this one amongst some more serious stuff like The Departed (the best performance in it). And Ferrell well is Ferrell. You know what kind of performance you're getting. The guy can truly act as comedy is the toughest nut to crack. You either love him or hate him, mostly I am in the former. He always leaves something memorable in his performances to take from. I can see this going to 3 1/2 stars but I don't know about 4 stars. Don't get me wrong, I liked it but to be truthful it is definitely not as strong as Anchorman but maybe stronger than Talladega Nights (but don't forget John C. Reilly's performance in that one!). And Eva Mendes was hot as Ferrell's wife with a nice running gag with Wahlberg not believing that his partner is married to Mendes (lol) And is it just me or is Samuel L. Jackson getting a little annoying? He's been doing this raucous one note performance in films for a little too long. It would be nice to see him in a film where he shows his acting muscles again. Samuel tell your agent you don't want to keep doing this one act all the time. You're better than that! If you don't like Farrell films this will definitely not sway you to the positive. If you do however give it a shot, you might like it better than me. | |
